Mr. John

Greetings! My name is Mr. John, and I will be teaching Grade 7 on the Sarıyer campus of Açı this year. Here is a little bit about me for those who are interested:

This is my second year as a full-time teacher, and my first at Açı. Last year I taught middle school English and Social Studies in Pescadero, California, in the U.S. Before that, I spent six years as a professional journalist. I wrote for newspapers, magazines and websites, including the San Jose Mercury News, the Marin Independent Journal and a bunch of other places most people have not heard of. But if you’re interested, I’ll tell you everything – I love journalism and can talk about it all day.

I moved to Istanbul in August 2013 with my wife, who I have been married to for three years. We had to leave our beloved dog Cuba behind in America when we moved, and we miss him terribly. Luckily we have lots of pictures to remind us of him.

I was born and raised in California, and I love it there with all my heart. But I have lived and traveled in many places – university in Seattle, working in Washington DC and Palo Alto, living in San Francisco, and now Turkey. I love surfing, hiking, reading, music and much more, and I am a big sports fan – especially American baseball. (Go Giants!)

I’m very excited to get to know all of my students this year, and I know we will have a ton of fun!
