Sarıyer 7C Homework: Poetry

5 May

Your mid-week homework is to read the poem below, then leave a comment on this post that answers the questions that follow. Remember what we talked about in class about Robert Frost, and about themes in poetry. Good luck!

FIRE AND ICE

By Robert Frost

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Reading Questions

1. Write the theme of this poem in one sentence. Remember the formula for writing a theme statement: THEME = SUBJECT + OPINION. To help yourself, follow these steps:

  • Brainstorm the subject of the poem. What is the topic? What is the poem about?
  • Brainstorm what the author is saying about the subject or topic. What does Robert Frost think about the subject in this poem?

2. Write a paragraph (3-5 sentences) comparing and contrasting “Fire and Ice” with “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening.”

  • How are the poems similar? Look at the language, mood, tone and theme of each poem. Here are some comparing words to help: similarly, likewise, also, as well, in the same way, in comparison.
  • How are the poems different? Look at the language, mood, tone and theme of each poem. Here are some contrasting words to help: on the other hand, however, conversely, instead, in contrast, on the contrary.

Leave your answers in a comment. Be sure to include your NAME and your CLASS.

    1) The theme of this poem is expecting the world to end and reflections about how this destruction will occur.

    2) The poem “Fire and Ice” is similar to the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” in the way that the poet uses language. For example, in both poems Frost is using rhymes. However, “Fire and Ice” is not composed of stanzas as the other poem. Another difference between these poems are the length and number of lines. Namely, there are nine lines in “Fire and Ice” and a total of 16 lines in 4 stanzas in “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”. These two poems are also different regarding theme and mood. “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” is about the beauty of a natural scene and obligations, and it has a peaceful but tired mood. Whereas “Fire and Ice” is about expecting the world to end and reflections about how this destruction will occur, and it has a more aggressive tone.

I think that the theme of this poem is that the world will either end in desire or hate.
In the poem “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening” the narrator or the poet thinks of how lovely and how calm the woods are and most probably wants to stay there as much as life can take him. Although in this poem the poet explains his opinions and feelings of how the world will end. Also one more difference between the two poems are in “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening” the poet or the narrator talks about his/her death however in this poem it’s about how the world will end. I think that the only similarity in both poems are that they somehow end with death.

THEME: I think the poem is about that even if we choose one from two opposite choices, we will never become so blind to see the other one and hate shall never be such an emotion to obstruct us from admitting about our thoughts.
SIMILARITIES: There are two choises in both two poems: fire or ice; to stay or go.
DIFFERENCES: One poem is about a man’s own decision, and one is about a decision that will someday effect the whole world.

I think the poem is about that we need to think good before choosing something. Because our choices determines our destiny.

THEME Life is full of contrasts, even feelings and death. The poem explains how our lives full of oppositions. Robert Frost trying to say that, each way you choose in your life, reaches in the same point. The road may differ, but the end is always same.
SIMILARITIES In both; there are two opposite choices. Like fire or ice, to stay or to go.
DIFFERENCES Fire and ice is about a man decision that only effects him; but in the other poem the decision will effect the whole world

The theme of this poem is that the intense emotions can cause a quick sudden death but also can cold bitter emotions.
    Similarities: Both talking about death.
Difrences: “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening” is about nature and a calm movement in the woods and the other talks about fire and ice.

Theme: The theme of the poem Fire and Ice is about having different thoughts and choices but it also tells that everything end the same.
Similarities: Both of them are about death and nature
Differences: Fire and Ice is about how the world is going to end but in the other poem the man says that he has a long time till he dies.

TOPIC: the author describes how the world will end. He thinks there are two possible ways of the worlds destruction. Either fire or Ice. However the outcome is death either way. The author says he would prefer fire which is connected to desire, greed, excess, jealousy and gluttony.Ice is the other way to die. The author relates ice to hate. hate, pain or revulsion. Either way you die and the world ends by destruction. we the people destroy it.

similarities: the poems both talk about weather conditions like hot and cold and they are both talk about ending and the first poem talks about death and destruction, while the second talks about sleep which could be understood as death.

differences: the first poem was melancholy because it was con stating how was selfish the people in the world. the second poem was imagery of nature like the horse with tinkering harness bells and the thick woods as well as the contrasting snowflakes to paint a picture of beauty to be gazed upon before continuing upon a journey, not an abrupt end like the first poem, but a long journey before sleep/death.

Theme : İ think it is about people being diferent and the fire and ice represent that.
Similaritys : they are both about being calm and living the moment. And in both the thing that is good doesn’t last.
Differences : In one time ends the good thing and in one fire and ice end the good thing.

  10. Leyla Erden May 17, 2014 at 1:09 pm #

Theme: this poem is about making a decision from two unlike choices, equally destructive.
Similarities: i think the similarities between the two poems are that they both emphasize ‘nothing gold can stay’. In both poems a harsh decision is made.
Differences: in Fire and Ice there is no obvious answer to the problem but in Stopping by The Woods on. ASnowy evening time eventually takes the man away and the man doesnt really have to think about the decision he has made. He can always come back another evening.

the theme of this poem is how the world will end. it’s different then stopping by the woods on a snowy evening because one is about how the world will end and the other one is about death i think the only similarity is both of the poems doesn’t have a good ending.
